Tools and techniques I use with patients to promote good health and emotional well-being: - Diet – a healthy diet provides a strong foundation for good health & emotional well-being. Say yes to healthy fats, fruits and veggies, “whole” foods, organic as much as possible. Say no to processed foods, additives, preservatives, sodas, sugars.
- Supplements – in addition to directly treating diseases and illnesses, supplements also provide extra support to prevent illness, preserve good health, and promote vitality and well-being. Deficiencies of nutrients are due to stress, lack of or excess exercising, poor diet, etc.
- Herbs – Help to both support and nourish the body, as well as balance the body if systems are off-kilter. Varied usage from boosting energy, boosting immune system, promoting good sleep, balancing hormones, and relieving stress and pain.
- Acupuncture – Painless, gentle, natural, nourishing to the body, mind, and spirit. It quickly balances both physical and emotional health. Wide range of uses from menstrual irregularities, menopause, stress, infertility, insomnia, post-op recovery, etc.
- Movement/Exercise – releases endorphins, relieves stress, strengthens muscles, increases circulation, “moves qi and blood” (very important in Chinese medicine!)
- Stress Reduction – yoga, tai qi, qi gong, meditation, deep breathing, positive thinking, etc. This is very important as our ability to process cortisol (the stress hormone) decreases with age. For ex. a teenager can recover from a stressful situation and rise in cortisol within 4-6 hours, while it may take a middle-aged adult a couple of days to recover.
- Hormonal Balance – When hormones are out of balance it can lead to fatigue, weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, excess appetite, acne, foggy thinking, etc. Herbs, supplements, and acupuncture are very effective ways of naturally balancing hormones.
